Thanks to War on Want's incredible supporters 2016 has been a year of amazing achievements.

Justice for Palestine

G4S has long profited from Israeli violations of Palestinian rights – its decision to sell its Israeli business after sustained campaigning shows that our boycott and divestment campaigns work.

Our campaign to ‘Protect Local Democracy’ inspired over 23,000 people to write to the government rejecting its plan to block local councils from deciding where to invest their pension funds. We will keep up the pressure in 2017 with our support for the legal challenge against the government.

We joined forces with our Palestinian partner, Addameer, to tell the stories of Palestinian political prisoners in Israeli detention. Please take a look and share!

Fighting toxic trade deals

With our amazing supporters we’ve generated massive public opposition to TTIP and CETA and forced politicians to sit up and take notice.

These unjust deals work for big business, not people and planet. TTIP was on the ropes before Brexit - our attention has now turned its evil twin, CETA.

End precarious contracts

Our Stand with Migrant Workers: End Precarious Contracts campaign launched with a day of action to demand Sports Direct end its use of precarious contracts.

War on Want supporters organised 14 demonstrations across the UK to pile on the pressure. Shortly after, Sports Direct offered retail staff the chance to move off zero hour contracts.

Garment workers fight back

We hosted a visit from Students Against Corporate Misbehaviour (SACOM) and launched their research in our report This Way to Dystopia: Exposing UNIQLO’s abuse of Chinese garments workers.

SACOM’s research forced UNIQLO to improve working conditions of garment workers in its Cambodia factory, but we are now calling on the fashion giant to publish details of every company involved in making their clothes.

Justice for Marikana miners

Four years since the South African Police Service gunned down striking mine workers at Lonmin's Marikana platinum mine in South Africa, killing 34, President Jacob Zuma announced that the government will pay compensation to the victims and their families.

This success is testament to the tireless work of War on Want's partner, the Marikana Support Campaign, and brings justice a step closer.

Our partners in the global South

In South Africa, our work with mining affected communities is supporting local people to fight for their rights and protect their land and environment. Our partners Abahlali, Ubunye Bama Hostela and Housing Assembly have been engaging in local urban planning processes to secure decent houses for their nearly 80,000 members.

In Kenya, our partner KENASVIT have been advocating for the implementation of a law that protects the rights of tens of thousands of informal traders.

In Colombia, we were on the ground during the general strike, providing crucial support to social movements in the pursuit of peace.

Thank you! We look forward to introducing you to more incredible partners in 2017.

War on Want patron Omar Barghouti enters fourth day of interrogation by Israeli authorities

22 March 2017 - 5:30pm

This repressive treatment of Omar Barghouti and other Palestinian human rights defenders shows that Israel is cementing its system of violence and discrimination towards Palestinians. The repression of Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) activists only proves why it is so necessary in the first place, and will only make the movement grow more.
