Glencore: Putting profit before people and planet

30 September 2015 - 2:30pm
Press release

Responding to news of Glencore’s plummeting share price, Owen Espley, War on Want’s Economic Justice campaigner, said:

“While investors in Glencore are now feeling the fallout from the company’s speculative and risky business model, communities across the world have been feeling the impact of, and resisting, Glencore’s operations for much longer.

“From the Philippines to Zambia, Glencore has a reputation as a fly-by-night company that doesn’t pay its fair share of taxes, damages the environment and rides roughshod over people and communities. It is time to hold to account a company that puts short term profit before people and the planet, and ask ‘in whose benefit do they really operate?’”

Mining giant Glencore is based in Switzerland, registered in Jersey and listed on the London Stock Exchange. It is one of the world’s largest extractive companies, and a producer and trader of over 90 commodities worldwide.
