Precarious contracts at the 'cold heart' of Sports Direct's working practices

22 July 2016 - 11:00am
Press release

Responding to today's (22 July) report by the Business, Innovation and Skills committee on Sports Direct's working practices, Owen Espley, Senior Economic Justice campaigner at War on Want, said:

"The report is rightly damning of Sports Direct’s business model which has job insecurity and exploitation at its cold heart.

"Mike Ashley's shameful protestations must not distract us from the fact that precarious contracts are the root cause of this abuse, with bosses holding all the power and workers afraid to challenge unfair conditions for fear of losing their job. It's migrant and women workers who suffer the worst.

"Millions of workers on precarious contracts face a daily fight to survive with dignity, forced to endure the anxiety of insecure work. It's clear from the committee’s report that Mike Ashley must now be held to account and the government must move to end precarious contracts."
