Stores probe shows need for law

Press release

The call followed the commission's publication of its initial inquiry into the four big UK supermarkets Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury's and Morrisons, which control almost three-quarters of the British grocery market.

Simon McRae, senior campaigns officer for War on Want, said: "The commission ignored huge concern that these giants abuse their market power to push down overseas suppliers' prices, and their employees' pay and conditions.

"Our recent study in Bangladesh revealed many workers are toiling 80 hours a week for 5p an hour, making cheap clothes for Tesco and Asda to sell in their UK stores.

"The commission ducked this issue. British ministers should match their rhetoric on global poverty with regulation."
