Tax: Public access to country-by-country reports is a 'no-brainer'

6 September 2016 - 1:30pm
Press release

Responding to the passing of an opposition amendment to a Finance Bill which grants the government the power to introduce public country-by-country reporting Owen Espley, Senior Economic Justice Campaigner at War on Want, said:

“Giving the public access to these country-by-country reports is a no-brainer. Sweetheart tax deals and cosy corporate relations mean the public has lost faith that the government is collecting the tax it should. The public needs this information to hold their government to account.

“The government continues to revel in tax competition and the race to the bottom that leaves the public footing the bill for dodged taxes and sees public services being run into the ground to prepare the way for increase private sector involvement, often by the very firms that are failing to pay their fair share in taxes. These regulations must be brought into force without delay.”
