Press release

Concluding her trip to the Middle East today, Theresa May is set to outline her ‘post-Brexit vision for the UK’s role in the region’. Ahead of her speech due to take place in Jordan, War on Want’s Executive Director, Asad Rehman, said:

“The true legacy of the UK’s involvement in the Middle East is one of arming repression through the selling of weapons that have fueled conflict, cozying up to regimes that continuously violate human rights, and of complicity in Israel’s relentless oppression of the Palestinians.

In outlining a ‘post-Brexit vision for the UK’s role in the Middle East', the UK government should ensure that the protection and promotion of human rights is central to our foreign policy objectives towards the region, starting with concrete steps to end the arms trade with countries such as Saudi Arabia and Israel.”
