USA seeks new UK trade talks: ‘It’ll be TTIP all over again’

1 July 2016 - 11:45am
Press release

Responding to news, in the wake of Brexit, that the USA want to start talks on UK-US trade deal, War on Want senior trade campaigner, Mark Dearn, said:

“The British public must be on their guard once any UK-US trade negotiations start - it’ll be TTIP all over again. We know only too well from what we have seen in TTIP that this will mean a huge threat to our democracy, human rights and the fight against climate change.

“Under TTIP, the US snapped up the UK’s offer of permanent privatisation of the NHS and all our public services. The UK government wanted to destroy new banking regulations. Both were eager to keep the deal secret and grant big business the power to sue governments for lost profits through its own private justice system.

“Brexit means the UK can shape its trade and investment policies for the first time in many years. We must take this opportunity to build a positive trade agenda that is good for the people of the UK and the world, and not just the interests of big business.”
