Palestine workshop -- morning session
29 January 2009
WSF 2009
We had breakfast and were out the door early that morning, as the War on Want team was to split to allow us to attend the various activities happening simultaneously. When we arrived at the site of the Palestine workshop we were involved in, we found the door to the seminar room locked and no one knew who had the keys! We reassured those waiting that the meeting would go ahead, and Graciela soon managed to find an empty classroom nearby. The meeting was split into a morning and afternoon sessions on the Palestinian call for Boycott Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) and building a global strategy. The difficulty with the first half of the meeting was that the 40 or so participants were quite varied in their understanding of the issues and the WSF process. Nevertheless there was a good initial discussion about what concrete action would be best to put forward to the WSF Assembly of Assemblies, as well as a discussion of the Mercosur Free Trade Agreement that Venezuela, Brazil, Ecuador and other Latin American countries have signed with Israel. The morning session also included a discussion around the effectiveness of particular BDS campaigns.
