EU-Canada trade deal CETA ‘must be stopped’

23 September 2016 - 2:45pm
Press release

As trade ministers from across Europe met in Bratislava today to discuss trade deals TTIP and CETA,  Mark Dearn, senior trade campaigner at War on Want, said:

"It is clear that CETA is faltering as Austria, Belgium and countries in Eastern Europe have serious concerns which reflect those of the millions across Europe who have called for an end to CETA and TTIP negotiations.

"As a new CETA study shows, this deal means job losses and less wages for workers across Europe, less money for governments and a drop-off in trade between EU countries. CETA is a recipe for economic doom in the EU. MEPs have highlighted that it is now clear that CETA is also a threat to workers’ rights and public services, and that the ISDS ‘corporate court’ mechanism is not fit for purpose.

"Seven years after CETA negotiations started, it will not be good enough to pretend these issues are solved by sticking on additions to CETA - and the question must be asked, did the European Commission not know about these flaws or did it simply pull the wool over our eyes? The time has come to stop this deal for good.”
