Government work permit plan ‘plays into the hands of exploitative bosses’

25 August 2016 - 12:15pm
Press release

Responding to reports that the UK government is considering introducing a work permit system for low paid EU migrant workers, Owen Espley, War on Want's Senior Economic Justice Campaigner, said:

"A work permit system is a recipe for eroding the pay and conditions of all workers.

"By creating hoops for migrant workers to jump through, there is a real danger the work permit system will push migrant workers into the shadows and into the hands of exploitative bosses.

"As the case of Sports Direct has shown, migrant workers face an uphill struggle to challenge abuse in the workplace and get decent pay. This needless red tape would make it more difficult for migrant workers to access their right to work, and so their ability to demand rights at work. The end result will be more exploitation."
