#WAGETHEFT – 5 WAYS EMPLOYERS ROB THEIR WORKERS

New research has found that at least 2 million workers in Britain are losing over £3 billion in unpaid holiday pay and wages a year. Workers on precarious contracts are often afraid to enforce their rights for fear they’ll lose future work. Migrant workers are often afraid to approach authorities for fear they’ll be arrested, detained and deported by the very authorities meant to be enforcing their rights.

Only by ensuring all workers have their rights at work protected can we stop a race to the bottom where employers push down conditions for everyone.

We must Stand With Migrant Workers and End Precarious Contracts. Here are five ways in which employers are robbing their workers’ of the wages they are owed.

1. Not Paying Holiday Pay:

 

The law means all workers are entitled to paid holidays, even if you're on a zero hours contract. Millions of people have missed out on £1.2bn of holiday pay. This is money you are entitled to. 

 

2. Unpaid overtime: 

 

If you're hourly paid, make sure you claim any hours of overtime. If you don’t claim all the hours you work, then your hourly rate is going to fall. You are entitled to be paid for the work you do, including any extra hours.

 

3. Deductions from pay: 

 

Ever had to buy your own uniform? Or been made to buy the brand you’ve been working for out of your own pocket? The law says employers cannot make unauthorised deductions to your pay, this includes making you buy your own uniform, or deducted for being late.

 

4. Not being given a payslip: you have the right to have your payslip.

 

The law requires that employees receive a written statement of gross pay, deductions and the net amount. Not being given a payslip is a breach of your employment rights.

 

5. Misclassifying work / Dispute over contracts: 

 

Time you spend in work-related activities must be considered as "work". This could include, for example, the payment of travelling time for care workers, which can amount to thousands of pounds a year.

Workers in hospitality and food couriers in the gig economy took action across the UK to demand an end to poverty wages and for their right to a union to be respected.
