War on Want activists have been joined by medical professionals in campaigning against tax avoidance by Alliance Boots. Activists donned white coats and placed a public health notice in front of the store to highlight that the missing tax puts public health at risk, by reducing the amount of money available for the NHS.

Boots makes over 40% of it's UK profits from contracts with the NHS yet has avoided an estimated £1.21bn since 2007. Doctors gave passersby “prescriptions” for a restored NHS - strengthening tax laws that would make companies like Boots pay its fair share. The protest was organised by War on Want together with Medact, Unite the Union and Change To Win.

Alliance Boots has avoided at least £1.21 billion in tax payments over the past seven years. This missing money would be enough to pay for nearly two and half years of prescription fees for the entire English public or the starting annual salary for new 85,000 NHS nurses.

Complex tax avoidance schemes cost HM Treasury an estimated £32 billion to £120 billion each year, a significant portion of which is attributable to avoidance of the corporation tax.[1]
