Priti Patel has 'serious case to answer' over UK aid money

22 November 2016 - 4:30pm
Press release

Responding to news that the UK is looking to divert billions in aid to private equity arm, CDC Group, Saranel Benjamin, International Programmes Director at War on Want, said:

"It’s a scandal that CDC Group should be supported with UK taxpayer money. The CDC Group has supported business ventures that have involved the use of obscure, offshore accounting schemes and engaged in activities that have abused labour and land rights in the global South. It is worrying that the CDC Group lacks any mechanisms for diligence and accountability and avoids any acts of transparency involving its business operations.

"The International Development Secretary, Priti Patel, has a serious case to answer in continuing with the privatisation of aid through the CDC Group. Increasing government support to this overseas private equity firm is a slap in the face for taxpayers whose hard earned tax money is going to fund private business ventures in the global South.

"Development aid should instead be used to assist communities affected by historical colonialism and who have seen their country’s natural, mineral and energy resources plundered by UK businesses, destroying their livelihoods and forcing people from their land."
