Briefing: Democratising UK Trade Policy - Why it Matters to us All

Modern trade and investment deals cover almost every aspect of everyday life: from healthcare to environmental and labour standards, and international development. This makes them everybody's business. The UK's arrangements for public and parliamentary engagement with and scrutiny of trade are woefully inadequate and need to be reformed before Brexit takes place.

This briefing is published by War on Want, alongside the Trade Justice Movement, Global Justice Now, Unison, and Friends of the Earth.

HSBC grilled over complicity in human rights abuse by shareholders and campaigners at Friday’s AGM

  • HSBC’s annual general meeting on Friday was attended by activists from War on Want and Palestine Solidarity Campaign, asking the bank about its business dealings with companies selling weapons and military equipment to Israel
  • Over a quarter of questions asked at the AGM were about the bank’s complicity in human rights violations against Palestinians. Several referenced the bank’s criminal complicity in other abuses
