Demonstration: Upping the Ante: St Barts Trust Cleaners March

After 5 days of strike action, the striking cleaners and porters of St Barts Hospital Trust will be marching from the Royal London Hospital through the East End to Mile End hospitals. Featuring speeches from the strikers and also the striking cleaners from LSE.

This demonstration is organised by Unite the Union. War on Want stands in solidarity with the more than 700 largely black and migrant hospital cleaners, security guards, catering staff and porters who are on strike in east London to demand 30p an hour pay rise. Their employer SERCO profits from both running migrant detention centres and from exploiting migrant labour in outsourced NHS services.

"Lift the Ban" on Asylum Seekers Working

War on Want is a part of a coalition of organisations calling on the government to "Lift the Ban" on people seeking asylum working. 

Currently, people seeking asylum in the UK are effectively banned from working, which means they are dependent on asylum support whilst they wait for a decision on their asylum claim. People seeking asylum are given just £5.39 per day to meet all their essential living costs, including food, clothing, toiletries and transport and often the cost of their asylum application.
