Tackle Workplace Discrimination: IStreetWatch

War on Want is working with the Migrants' Rights Network to help spread the word about iStreetWatch.  iStreetWatch is an online platform that collects reports to monitor racist and xenophobic incidents across the UK.

Racism and xenophobia have been spurred on by the referendum result and the campaign that preceded it. We all have a role in tackling it. Migrant workers across the UK are at particular risk of racism, abuse and exploitation.

Migrant, Black, Asian and minority ethnic (BAME) and women workers often face the worst terms of employment through zero-hour contracts, agency work and employment with outsourced companies. This reinforces structural discrimination. When work becomes divided on grounds of race or gender, division can lead to discrimination. Workers on precarious contracts often feel unable to challenge abuse for fear of losing future work.

One practical way we can help tackle discrimination is to make discrimination visible. iStreetWatch helps to do this in a way that means even where a victim of abuse doesn’t want to raise a grievance or report it to the police, it doesn’t go un-noted. Helping spread the word about iStreetWatch is one way that trade unionists can demonstrate that trade unions take a strong stand against racism and xenophobia.

iStreetWatch collects reports to monitor racist and xenophobic incidents across the UK in the street as well as in workplaces. It aims to:

  • Make these now everyday incidents visible to a wider community.
  • Help people at risk map which areas are safer to be in.
  • Collect data over time to help monitor the correlation between these incidents and inflammatory speech from the media and politicians.

Everyone has the right to feel safe on the street and where they work. Please stand with migrant workers and spread the word about iStreetWatch in your workplace, in your trade union branch and within your community.

You can access iStreetWatch here: www.istreetwatch.co.uk

iStreetWatch is managed by Migrants’ Rights Network.
