HSBC campaign update

Israel uses military force to maintain its oppression of Palestinians. It targets people with tear gas grenades, rubber-coated bullets and live ammunition, and carries out mass arrests, house demolitions and extrajudicial executions.

This brutality lies at the heart of Israel’s systematic violations of Palestinian rights, amounting to serious breaches of international law, and even war crimes. Against incredible odds, Palestinians continue to resist this oppression, demanding their rights to freedom, justice and self-determination.

Palestinian civil society has made clear what we here in the UK can do to support their struggle for justice: work to stop UK corporations from supporting and profiting from Israel’s system of oppression.

Take action: Tell HSBC to sever ties with companies selling weapons to Israel

In summer 2017, we launched our campaign to pressure HSBC to cut all ties with companies selling weapons and security services to Israel’s repressive regime.

Activists held pickets at HSBC branches in over 20 locations in the UK, and over 6,500 people emailed HSBC demanding divestment from companies involved in the arms trade with Israel.

HSBC responded by asking for a meeting. In September 2017, we met with bank executives to reiterate that HSBC must immediately divest from companies selling arms to Israel.

We took one clear message away from our meeting with the bank’s executives: HSBC is nervous about the public response to its business complicity.

And to us that means one thing: time to increase the pressure on HSBC.

In the next few months, we’ll be ramping up the pressure on HSBC in the lead up to its Annual General Meeting in April.

As an individual, you can join this campaign by sharing the e-mail action so we can make sure that HSBC hears from thousands more people like you.

If you are part of a group that would like to adopt the campaign, get in touch, and we can set you up with some materials and instructions on how to organise an information table/picket outside your local HSBC branch.

Together, we can and will end UK complicity in the oppression of Palestinians and all people.
