Patel Must Go, says War on Want

7 November 2017 - 2:45pm
Press release

More details have emerged on International Development Secretary Priti Patel's 'vacation' meetings with Israeli officials. Downing Street has admitted that she discussed with Israel the idea of giving the country British foreign aid cash.

Responding to news, War on Want’s senior militarism and security campaigner, Ryvka Barnard, said:

“The scandal of Priti Patel’s ‘secret’ meetings with Israeli politicians gets worse as more details emerge. Patel’s suggestion that the UK funnel aid money to the Israeli military is beyond outrageous. UK development money should be used to eradicate poverty and to support people in realising their human rights; aid money should not, and cannot, be used to support armed groups.

The core function of the Israeli military is to enforce Israel’s illegal occupation, and its brutal siege on the Gaza Strip. The UK government should be taking steps to end its ongoing complicity in Israel’s oppression of  Palestinians, not increasing support by funnelling aid money to be used for more war crimes.

Priti Patel is clearly using her position to cosy up with Israel’s repressive regime. She should resign immediately, and the UK government should take the steps necessary to end its complicity in violations of international law through its arms trade with Israel.”

Ryvka Barnard is available for further comment and interviews.
